Gay Pride, Gay Marriage and Decent Society

June 30th, 2008

By Jose Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain. Excerpts from speech upon passing Spain’s historic human rights legislation.

“‘We are not legislating, honorable members, for people far away and not known by us. “‘We are enlarging the opportunity for happiness to our neighbors, our coworkers, our friends, and our families: at the same time we are making a more decent society, because a decent society is one that does not humiliate its members.

Weeks 6-8: Knowing is Essential

March 1st, 2008
“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” –Henry Winkler

It is easy for us males in the gay world to have assumptions about each other. I think that’s why such thing as special symbols were born; so that we could help diminish unnecessary assumptions.

The Hanky Color Code which grew out of the modern gay movement of the mid-20th Century is one such system of symbols. What types of scenarios might we see if imagination were to overtake the limited “reality” of such marketing? Not that we need more print and visual advertisement and marketing. It would be more like replacing some of the current scenarios with ones from LBGT perspectives. Imagine that food ad with the partner cooking for a happy spouse, and both of them being guys! Or two guys married to each other and one of them asking for some house chore to be done, or picking the kids up from school, or dealing with the in-laws?

The possibilities could go on and on and that’s imagination.
